The Quixotic EP
A 8 track dubstep ep (26m 7s) — released May 16th 2011 on somethinksounds.
Somethinksounds put their name on the map last year with Eliphino's wildly successful debut release 'The Undivided Whole" EP. This year the label is back with their second output, "The Quixotic EP" by multi-instumentalist, vocalist and producer Tommy Tempa.
Blurring the lines of traditional electronic music, this digital only release is comprised of seven tracks and intended to be a single, free-flowing piece of music. Spanning just over twenty-two minutes, Tempa shows off his non-traditional and sometimes experimental recording methods while maintaining a sound that is both rhythmically strong and bold.
His textural and percussive electronic music has a fresh and organic feel that conceivably stems from his fondness of tape hiss. Often engaging in habits like recording bicycle bells onto cassette and multi-sampling a museum spinet (or two), Tempa's boundless approach to sound generation contributes to his ability to drift between genres, sometimes even within the space of one track.
The EP opens with "Fragments", two minutes that highlight Tempa's percussionary adeptness. The tracks that follow manage to seamlessly fuse his knowledge of bass with his love of global percussion, all the while punctuated by clever audio samples, pitched & chopped vocals and rich horns. Truly a journey, the listener is led from the experimental warmness of "Micro Ballistics" to the hopeful afrobeat vibe on "Now or Never" to the melancholy sounds of "Warm Glow of The City" and "Roma". While listening it becomes pretty apparent that Tempa draws inspiration from the sounds of his home city of london, his music matching up to the cultural melting pot of Hackney where he resides.
Quite possibly a new name for some, Tempa is no rookie. His "Time To Run" limited run EP on 2600 Recordings combined hip-hop with live instrumentation, funk, jazz and electronic influences has received radio support from the likes of Huw Stephens & Gilles Peterson of Radio One and Mr Trick & Wrong Tom of Resonance FM. He also has a few remixes under his belt, most notably a pitched down remix of Caribou's "Sun".
In addition to his solo productions, Tempa is one third of London-Bristol experimental hip-hop project Mancini and The Creepers. He's also collaborating with Raisa Khan of pop-noise outfit Micachu and the Shapes and Olly Puglisi of the Laurel Collective.
"The Quixotic EP" is the sound of reflection; and if you listen closely, you just might be able to hear the pots and pans he used to make dinner with.
